Victory Over Backsliden Sins

He Who Does Not Gather, Scatters

The backsliden Christian is useless.

Harsh words, I know, but we’ve lost our saltiness. We’ve covered our light and therefore the light does not shine. When this happens most everything in our lives is in a state of chaos and doubt, including our salvation. The light that once burned brightly and ignited a fire within has faded.

Sadly, even what we have is being taken from us. Are you able to recall scripture the same as before or have you forgotten the details? More importantly, the riches and rewards which should have been ours in heaven are not there, due to lost opportunity and failure. The evidence of loss and destruction is littered all around our lives and the deeper and longer the blacksliding process continues, the more devastating the loss.

I could continue to write about what’s been lost and how bad things are, but there’s no need. Each of us has a unique tale and each of us has been dealt our own measure of guilt and shame. Each of us is called back according to His will and we each have our lessons learned.

Casting Out Demons

There is no question, we are in spiritual warfare and reclaiming your relationship with Jesus will not come easy. Jesus forgives and will once again change your life, soften your heart and make you useful to His will and purpose, but you must now have faith and works. Please don’t confuse works with salvation or being worthy of anything, but realize James 2:26  – “faith without works is dead” – and part of the healing process is producing works from faith.

Jesus is faithful and He will never leave you nor forsake you, but you must now truly deny yourself and pick up your cross daily and follow Him (Luke 9:23). Jesus will do the healing and revival, but your faith in Him and that He will do what He promised is required. Remember, Peter walked on water until he doubted. Peters faith allowed him to walk on water but it was his lack of faith that caused him to sink.

Luke 11:24 When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 “And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 “Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”

The backslider has serious struggles to overcome and this passage in Luke (also found in Matthew) clearly shows just how bad the situation really is. The good news is, Jesus is able to conquer and is willing to soften a calloused heart. However, you will have to put forth great effort to put your house back in order. You alone will never succeed at this, but with Christ and only with Christ, you can overcome.

Your part in the backsliders recovery process is to hold on to the promises of God by believing and trusting in Jesus. You cannot trust your own thoughts and feelings, for they have been deceived and host to lies. You’re in sin and there is a spiritual battle taking place within you and whispers of deceit, doubt, and discouragement are originating from within your own consciousness. Remember, seven demons, each more wicked than the first are intent on keeping their hold on you, least they be cast away and forced to wander in restlessness.

Your sin and the desire for sin must be cast out. Jesus will do this for you. Furthermore, the Spirit of God and His Word must fill the void and reside in you. This is His will.

Conquering Giants

Once again, there is nothing easy about denying yourself and picking up your cross daily to follow Jesus. There is no magic wand that will suddenly make things easier. Your reward for overcoming is ten fold, but your current state is the result of sin, brought on by your own will.

Revelation 3:21  To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne.

There are many references to the gifts for those who overcome. However, in this world you will have life more abundant, be freed from the bondage of sin and you will have the peace, blessing, and Spirit of God.

Addition is a giant. There are many forms of addiction, all of which are the same at root. Many sins lead to addiction and the end result is enslavement. Addiction is not easily broken, but with Jesus, you can overcome and He will free you from the enslavement.

In the healing pattern for overcoming, I will use cigarettes as the example addiction. It is common.

Lust is a giant. There are many selfish desires which are sin, but lust is a close cousin of addiction and therefore a form of enslavement. The enslaver isn’t a substance, but an evil and sinful behavior that controls the mind and thought patterns of the slave. Without Jesus, lust is impossible to overcome.

Lust isn’t always in the form of sex. Lust could easily be replaced with “an uncontrollable urge to eat or acquire riches”. However, in the healing pattern for overcoming, I will be using the “lust of the eye” as an example.

Matthew 5:28  But I say to you, anyone who stares at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

The “lust of the eye” is huge and extremely common for both men and women. It is almost inescapable and in no way something that can be conquered by man. Only through Jesus can we truly overcome and be set free from this sin. It’s a lust that can only be tamed through spiritual intervention and the healing hand of God.

Healing Pattern for Overcoming

Whatever your personal demons may be or whatever giants you need conquered, this is a pattern you can use to become victorious in your walk with Jesus.

1 – Faith in The Lord

Faith is key, faith is everything. Your faith is the backbone to your entire relationship with Jesus, including your salvation. Jesus will heal you and He will be with you during your darkest moments. He loves you and He will assist you every step of the way. Believe this as fact and trust in Jesus.

When this is complete and you are no longer enslaved by addiction and lusts, your faith will have dramatically grown reaching new heights. The desires you have will be replaced with characteristics from God, enabling you to lean upon Jesus and empowering you with the tools to overcome the storms of life.
